I respect everyone's opinion about Jazz including people being interviewed in Ken Burn's Jazz documentary, especially since they are from jazz musicians who has been out there playing and practicing their art all their lives. I even respect your opinion Mr. Wong. I do agree that we play music because we want to touch the listener. And the music has to be musical at the foremost. But different people have different tastes and different music touches different people.
The program we did on jazz vocals we wanted to introduce the different kinds of jazz vocal performance style like scat and vocalese to our listener so if you find those styles too technical and not your cup of tea, thats totally fine. If you don't agree with my view on this subject thats also ok.
This IS in fact a discussion forum and we welcome different points of views. However I am sure that all the great jazz musicians on that Ken Burns documentary has transcribed solos from past masters when they were first learning before they developed their own unique style and I am sure that they also get the point that vocalese is really just a way of paying respect and homage to those classic solos played by some of the greatest soloists in jazz history like Coltrane, Miles, Bill Evans. And its from perhaps THE greatest jazz album in history, "Kind Of Blue" (you will find many people agree on this). As another example, even if I have to play "Hotel California" its fun for me to copy that solo because it is such a classic. I can also choose to improvise on my own if I want to, and you have the choice of liking it or not either way of course so I think it is still you that is missing the point.
